Kwara State University
Kwara State University, known as KWASU, is a state-owned institution situated in Malete, Kwara State, Nigeria. Its establishment marked a significant milestone as it became the 77th university registered by the Nigerian Universities Commission (NUC) and the 95th recognized university in Nigeria.
This institution’s inception in 2009, under the leadership of Dr. Bukola Saraki, was driven by a unique vision. The history and organization of Kwara State University (KWASU) reflect a journey towards establishing a state university in Kwara State, Nigeria. This endeavor began in earnest on July 11, 2007, when Kwara State Governor Bukola Saraki inaugurated a planning committee. Under the leadership of former governor Alhaji Mohammed Shaaba Lafiagi, this committee laid the groundwork for the establishment of KWASU.
The critical milestone came when the Bill for Kwara State University was signed into law on December 24, 2008. Subsequently, on February 9, 2009, KWASU obtained the certificate and instrument to operate from the National Universities Commission (NUC). The university’s inaugural Vice-Chancellor, Professor Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah, assumed office on July 28, 2009, bringing with him a wealth of academic experience from his role as Chair of the African American Studies Department at Western Illinois University in the United States.
Professor Ibrahim Agboola Gambari, who later became the Chief of Staff to the President of Nigeria, served as the pioneer chancellor of KWASU. Notably, Johnson Adewunmi assumed the role of chancellor on May 25, 2020, as appointed by Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq.
KWASU envisions a multi-campus structure, with its academic activities spread across three campuses located in Malete, Ilesha-Baruba, and Osi-Opin. The Malete campus, designated as the main campus, houses the Colleges of Pure and Applied Sciences, Information and Communication Technology, and Education.
