Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah Early Life

Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah was born in December 1962. He hails from Ilorin, Kwara State, Nigeria. He’s the son of Ahmad Alabi and Bilkisu Na’Allah.

Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah Career

Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah worked as a teacher at the Ilorin Schools Board from 1981 to 1984. He also lectured at the University of Ilorin from 1984 to 1994. He served as an assistant professor at Western Illinois University from 1998 to 2002.

Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah is the founder and faculty adviser of the Creative Writers Society at Western Illinois University, Macomb, since the year 1998.

The prominent scholar served as the Vice-chancellor of Kwara State University in Nigeria from 2009 to 2019. He was later appointed to become the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja on July 1, 2019.

Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah received a Bachelor of Arts in 1988 from the University of Ilorin. In 1992, he received a Master’s of Arts in Literature in English from the same university. In 1999, he received his PhD in Comparative Literature from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada.

Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah Awards

Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah has received numerous awards and recognition both nationally and internationally. Some of his awards include:

  • The 2018 Exemplary Leadership in Higher Education in Africa Award, by GUNi-Africa.
  • The 2017 Hero and Icon of Good Leadership award, by the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS).
  • The Commonwealth Youth Council awarded him the African Patriot Award in 2016.
  • The West African Students Union, WASU, inducted him into the WASU Hall of Fame as the Kwame Nkrumah Leadership Award.
  • The Award of Recognition of Sterling Achievements/Outstanding Contributions, by the Unilorin Alumni Association, Abuja Chapter, in November 2013.

On September 22nd, 2022, Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah, while serving as the University of Abuja Vice Chancellor, advised youths to work hard and be disciplined. He called on youths, especially students, to be hardworking and shun all forms of indiscipline and not allow distractions to take over their future. He made this known while declaring open the 2022 First Awards Winners Lecture titled: “Informal Art Education, Lessons From The Harmattan Workshop.”

On June 7th, 2022, Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah, as the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, dismissed two professors over sexual harassment. He told the News Agency of Nigeria in New York that the university had introduced a policy on sex abuse on campus, which had been published. He said the institution is committed to high moral standards and won’t tolerate any act of misconduct perpetrated by its staff members against students.

On December 22, 2021, Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah, the University of Abuja Vice Chancellor called for a regular assessment of Nigerian professors given their contribution to industrial and national development. He made this known when he addressed journalists in Abuja at the University of Abuja and Abuja Chambers of Commerce and Industry Day celebration. He urged the government to institute a strategy to evaluate each professor in the country on a 3-year basis to ascertain their level of collaboration as well as relationships with industries in order to propel economic growth.

On September 17, 2022, the Association of Nigerian Authors released the list of 2022 fellowship nominees, including the Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Alla, Prof. Tess Onwueme, and other notable professors who have contributed to the growth of literature in Nigeria.

On May 25, 2022, Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah, as Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, appealed to members of the institution’s alumni association to support the rebuilding efforts of the management and staff of their alma mater. He made the request when he met with the members of the executive committee of the association during a recent visit to the United States of America (USA).

On October 27, 2021, as Vice-Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah blamed the lack of intelligence for the failure of the security forces to arrest the deteriorating security situation. He made the remarks while speaking at a symposium with the theme, “Kinetic and non-kinetic application in the fight against insecurity in Nigeria.”

In the middle of 2021, Prof. Abdul-Rasheed Na’Allah unveiled three books, two plays, and a literary review of Dadakuada, a traditional Yoruba oral genre. Raheem Akingbolu, who witnessed the presentation of the books and the life performances that heralded them, writes that Abdul Rasheed Na’Allah has successfully established the place of cultural heritage in the development of religion in African societies.

In July 2019, Professor Na’allah took over as the University of Abuja Vice Chancellor. His predecessor, Professor Michael Adikwu, while handing over to Na’allah, called on the management and staff to support the new Vice-chancellor to enable him to succeed. Na’allah was appointed the Vice-chancellor of the University of Abuja by the Governing Board of the institution after a screening and selection process.
