What are the ASEAN[Malaysian] Scholarship for Nigerian Students

The Name “ASEAN” refers to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.

ASEAN Scholarship is available for students from Malaysia entering Secondary 1, Secondary 3, or Pre-university 1 in specific Singapore secondary schools or junior colleges. 

Nigerians aren’t eligible for the ASEAN scholarship. There are other scholarships in Malaysia for Nigerians which I have listed in the later part of this article.

What are the Benefits of the ASEAN Scholarship?

Here’s what the scholarship offers:

  • Yearly allowance including hostel stay.

  • Return airfare for East Malaysians or transport allowance for West Malaysians.

  • Exam fees for GCE O-Level and A-Level (if applicable) are covered once.
  • Subsidized medical benefits and accident insurance.

Apply for the ASEAN scholarship via the official website. Do so before  Thursday, 25 April 2024 (Secondary) or Thursday, 13 June 2024 (Pre-University 1).

Some Scholarship Opportunities in Malaysia for Nigerians

Here are 3 scholarships that Nigerians are eligible for in Malaysia or Singapore:

#1. The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF)

The Petroleum Technology Development Fund (PTDF), is a Federal Government agency tasked with enhancing indigenous human capacity and petroleum technology for the oil and gas sector.

Applications are open for MSc and PhD scholarships for the 2024/2025 academic session.

This scheme aims to provide candidates with access to a diverse range of knowledge and facilities offered by top-tier institutions worldwide. 

If you’re interested, you can apply through PTDF to specific programs at partner institutions.

The scholarship covers flight tickets, health insurance, tuition, and bench fees (if applicable), as well as allowances for accommodation and living expenses.

For the 2024/2025 session, applications will be accepted only for PTDF partner universities in the United Kingdom, Germany, France, and Malaysia, ensuring adherence to high standards and alignment with the scheme’s objectives.

#2. International Medical University (IMU) Malaysian Scholarship

At IMU, they understand that university can be a transformative journey that may require some assistance to help them realize their aspirations.

Hence, they offer various scholarships and bursaries to support them in reaching their full potential.

The bursary value is applicable for the first year of studies. The bursary will be directly awarded based on the entrance score. 

It is automatically granted to students who meet the requirements and enroll in the listed undergraduate programs.

The University will determine the equivalency of pre-university results and grant the bursaries at its discretion. All decisions are final.

#3. Developing Solutions master’s scholarship

The University of Nottingham offers the Developing Solutions master’s scholarship, which started in 2001. It 

was designed for students from African, South Asian, and other selected Commonwealth countries. 

This scholarship aims to help international students who want to contribute to the development of an important economy. 

Also environmental, structural, social, or political aspects in their home countries.

Aim and Benefits of Developing Solutions Masters Scholarships

The University of Nottingham provides scholarships covering 50% or 100% of full-time master’s tuition fees.

These one-year scholarships aim to support innovative and dedicated students who can effectively showcase their creativity in developing solutions that will bring about positive change in their home countries.

Application Criteria

Applicants will primarily be evaluated based on their ability to explain their vision and present a concrete plan for developing a specific solution that addresses key economic, environmental, structural, social, or political challenges in their home country.

Strong candidates will demonstrate how their proposed solution aligns with the learning outcomes of their chosen course of study and how it will help their efforts.
