History of University of Lagos Medicine and Surgery
The Department of Medicine was established alongside the College of Medicine by an Act of Parliament in 1962. The department’s main focus is teaching medicine, with an emphasis on developing students’ clinical skills alongside theoretical knowledge. The Department has three primary responsibilities: teaching, research, and serving the community. Many of the Department’s lecturers are also Honorary Consultants at the Lagos University Teaching Hospital.
The department comprises eleven specialty units, including Cardiology, Dermatology and Venerelogy, Endocrinology and Metabolism, Clinical Haematology and Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine, Gastroenterology, and Emergency Medicine. Recently, two new units have been created: Infectious Diseases and Intensive Care. The Department trains Medical and Dental students, Pharmacy students, and other Para-medical students. Additionally, the Department is involved in teaching Student Nurses and Student Midwives. Medical students have three postings in the Department as part of their undergraduate professional program.
The clinical programme for undergraduate students comprises two main postings, namely Junior Posting (2 months) and Senior Posting (3 months), which follow two brief introductory clinical postings known as Basic Therapeutic Skills and Basic Clinical Skills. Prior to admission into the clinical programme, students must successfully complete the pre-clinical basic medical science course.
Upon completion of the Medicine posting, students should have achieved a globally accepted level of proficiency in clinical medicine, possess the ability to methodically solve clinical problems using proper history taking, physical examination, and basic laboratory tests, and be capable of synthesizing clinical and laboratory findings to arrive at a diagnosis and list of possible diagnoses, as well as develop an appropriate plan of action. It is important that this clinical skill acquisition be supplemented by a solid theoretical understanding of medicine.
During the medicine posting, emphasis is placed on several important topics, such as the need for ongoing medical education, accessing healthcare information, and the significance of a team-based and holistic approach to treating medical conditions. The Department has a departmental library that contains journals and textbooks that aid in the pursuit of excellence in medical care.
The Bachelor of Nursing Science programme is designed to prepare competent practitioners who utilize a nursing process approach to provide safe, effective, and affordable health services to individuals, families, and communities. The programme aims to produce skilled professionals with a strong academic foundation, capable of attaining the professional qualifications and skills necessary for senior positions in the healthcare industry. Graduates of the programme are equipped to implement nursing interventions that minimize individual problems using a holistic and client/family-centered approach in homes, communities, and healthcare institutions.
In partnership with the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, the Department trains doctors for the fellowship examination of the National Postgraduate Medical College of Nigeria and the West African College of Physicians. Graduates of these Fellowship programmes are now a major part of the medical teaching staff in Nigeria. Furthermore, the Department collaborates with the University of Lagos Consultancy Services and other organizations to conduct periodic continuing professional development training courses for healthcare professionals, including doctors and nurses.
