The founding Dean of the Faculty was the late Doctor Mbanwusi M.C., a senior consultant of Surgery, and it began with 17 medical students.

In 2003, the Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences was established, taking over the three existing departments and pre-clinical student training. The first Provost of the College of Medicine and Health Sciences was appointed in 2003 by Prof. Ibeh C.I. After his tenure as the Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, he was succeeded by Dr. P.J.C. Nwosu in 2005. Prof. A.E. Anya became the Dean in June 2009, before he handed over to the current Dean, Professor C.T. John, at the end of his tenure in June 2014.

Since its establishment, the Madonna University Faculty of Medicine has experienced consistent growth in its staff, facilities, student enrolment, and graduate output. The first batch of graduates was produced in 2009, and the faculty’s staff has been active in attending national and international conferences.

The governance of the faculty operates through an integrated approach where each staff member is assigned as a coordinator or officer responsible for specific duties in the various departments. These coordinators/officers report to their respective department heads, who oversee their tasks and then update the Dean accordingly. Regular meetings of the faculty board are held, during which issues affecting staff and students, as well as the delivery of courses and duties, are discussed, debated, and resolved in a manner that promotes a positive working relationship between staff, students, and the university administration. This approach enhances the sustainability of our role as staff and ensures a conducive environment for learning and teaching.

The Faculty of Medicine at Madonna University was established to offer world-class medical education to students who aspire to become healthcare professionals. The faculty aims to produce competent and compassionate doctors who are well-grounded in both the theory and practical aspects of medicine.

The Medicine and Surgery program at Madonna University aims to educate and train MBBS candidates with a competency-directed and community-oriented approach that emphasizes social responsiveness, relevance, and life-long learning. a. To provide students with a solid scientific and professional foundation that is broad and balanced, to prepare them to become medical doctors who can work anywhere in Nigeria and be accepted by the international community.

b. To equip future health personnel with the necessary training to provide care at the Primary Health Care (PHC) level.

c. To develop in students the ability to apply their knowledge and skills to solve theoretical and practical issues that meet internationally recognized standards and prepare them for postgraduate training for specialization both locally and abroad.

d. To train medical doctors with strong management skills that enable them to take on leadership roles in healthcare delivery and develop transferable skills that are valuable in medical practice.

e. Providing quality medical education: The faculty aims to provide a conducive learning environment that enables students to acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to become competent medical professionals.

f. Producing competent medical professionals: The faculty’s goal is to produce competent medical professionals who can provide quality healthcare services to individuals and communities.

g. Promoting research and innovation: The faculty is committed to promoting research and innovation in the field of medicine, with the aim of improving healthcare services in Nigeria and beyond.
