About Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, (IAUE)

Ignatius Ajuru University of Education (IAUE) traces its roots back to the Rivers State College of Education, which operated from June 1971 to October 2009. Originally established as an autonomous institution, the college underwent significant transformations to achieve full maturity, positioning itself to play a more dynamic role in society. A Governing Council was instituted with responsibilities ranging from staff recruitment to overall administrative and financial control of the institution.

Mr. E. Aguma, initially appointed as Principal in January 1975, later became the first Provost of the College. Dr. E.T. Green succeeded Mr. Alagoa as the Chairman of the Council in June 1975. However, with a change in government in July 1975, an interregnum ensued, leading to the appointment of a new Governing Council in November of the same year. Dr. F.A. Eke chaired the council, and Mr. R.I.C. Koko assumed the position of Provost, marking a new phase in the institution’s leadership.

This transition marked the evolution of the college into Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, with a commitment to providing quality education. The first provost, Mr. E. Aguma, played a pivotal role in this transformation in 1975. The university continues its dedication to education and the holistic development of its students.

In January 1977, the Rivers State College of Education made a significant move to its permanent site at Rumuolumeni, although some essential facilities were still under development. This relocation marked a crucial milestone, providing the institution with a physical presence conducive to planning further growth and enhancing existing facilities. On March 11, 1978, a historic event unfolded with the official opening and first graduation ceremony, celebrating the success of 462 students who completed the Nigeria Certificate in Education (NCE) program. This group comprised four sets of students who passed their diploma exams between 1974 and 1977.

The college expanded its offerings, introducing a degree program that welcomed its pioneer students on May 28, 1982. By the end of the 1983/1984 academic session, a total of 3,169 students had successfully completed various programs. Notably, 2,504 students underwent the NCE program, 531 students passed through the ACE program, and 134 students participated in the B.Ed. program. A distinctive aspect was highlighted as the Rivers State College of Education, affiliated with the University of Ibadan, was the sole institution offering the Bachelor of Education degree program among all affiliated Colleges of education.
