About Broward College

Broward College, located in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, has a rich history dating back to its establishment in 1959 as the Junior College of Broward County (JCBC). Founded under the leadership of President Joe B. Rushing, the college began its journey with a modest faculty of 28 and an initial class of 701 students. During its early years, classes were held in temporary buildings on the western edge of the Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport until permanent facilities were constructed in 1963.

In 2008, the institution underwent a significant transformation, adopting its current name, Broward College, and reflecting its status as a “state college.” This designation allowed Broward College to expand its offerings beyond two-year programs, enabling it to grant four-year bachelor’s degrees. Throughout its history, the college has played a vital role in the community, providing accessible higher education opportunities to students in the region. Notably, Broward College has seen leadership transitions, with figures like Dr. Myron Blee and A. Hugh Adams serving as presidents, contributing to its growth and development. 

Broward College has undergone a series of significant changes and transformations throughout its history. These changes began shortly after the arrival of Dr. A. Hugh Adams, who became the college’s president. In quick succession, the institution changed its name from the Junior College of Broward County to Broward Junior College, reflecting its evolving role. Furthermore, the Florida Legislature’s decision to remove junior colleges from county school board oversight and establish district boards of trustees marked a pivotal moment in the college’s governance structure. In 1970, the college was renamed Broward Community College to better align with its mission.

Dr. Adams played a crucial role in expanding access to education within Broward County during his 19-year tenure. Under his leadership, both the South and North campuses were established, along with the Downtown Center and the Tigertail Lake Center, enhancing educational opportunities for residents. Subsequent presidents, such as Dr. Will Holcombe and Dr. Larry Calderon, continued the college’s growth and development. Dr. Calderon, in particular, made history as the college’s first president of Hispanic heritage. The college continued to evolve under the leadership of various presidents, including J. David Armstrong, Jr., and, most recently, Gregory Adam Haile, Esq., who took office in May 2018, continuing Broward College’s legacy of academic excellence and accessibility.
