Learning Objectives:

  • What is social studies?
  • List five objectives of social studies.
  • State five important aspects of social studies.

Rationale: Social Studies is an essential subject that helps students understand the world around them and the people within it. It is the study of societies, cultures, and events that have shaped the world, and it helps students develop critical thinking skills and gain a better understanding of diverse perspectives. This lesson aims to introduce students to the subject of Social Studies and explain the importance of Social Studies in their lives and in society.

Prerequisite Knowledge: 

1. Basic understanding of community and the relationships between people in it.

2. Awareness of the different roles people play in society, such as family members, community members, and workers.

3. Familiarity with the concept of culture and how it influences people’s beliefs and behaviors.

4. Knowledge of basic geography concepts, such as maps, locations, and geographical features.

5. Understanding the importance of rules and laws in maintaining a safe and fair community.

6. Basic knowledge of historical events, such as holidays and important historical figures.

Learning Materials:

Picture books, Maps, Videos and Presentations. diaries, letters, and newspaper articles, Historical artifacts. 

Reference Materials: Social Studies Textbook


INTRODUCTIONThe teacher presents pictures, historical artifacts, newspapers. Use them to explain what social studies is all about.Learners looks at the learning materials brought to the class. Listen to the teacher.Arousing the interest of the pupils.
The teacher defines Social Studies as  the study of man’s life, his interactions with his social and physical environment and how sciences and technology help him to solve problems in these environments.The pupils repeated after the teacher.Defining term Social Studies as a teaching subject
STEP IIThe teacherlists the objectives of social studies
To understand and appreciate other people’s cultures and to live peacefully with them.
To learn how to rely on and exploit the physical environments.
To be law abiding citizens and nation builders.
To stress the importance of cooperation, understanding and tolerance in a multicultural country like Nigeria.
To be dynamic leaders and good followers.
To understand changes and how to cope with such changes in our community.
To appreciate the need to play our roles at home, school, community and in our country for the benefits and development of ourselves and the country at large.

STEP IIIThe teacher mentions the importance of social studies 
Social studies enables us to know and make good use of natural resources in our environment.
 It helps us to develop a good sense of moral and social responsibilities, e.g. honesty, hard work, dignity, punctuality etc.
It teaches the importance of peaceful co-existence with other people from different cultural areas.
Social studies teaches the students to be good citizens of their country by performing their duties.
It lays a solid foundation for the study of other subjects such as Government, Geography, Economics etc. in the senior secondary schools.
