About Ajayi Crowther University

Ajayi Crowther University, located in Oyo, has its roots traced back to the Supra Diocesan Board (West) of the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). Originating from the CMS training institution in Abeokuta in 1853, the university underwent relocations to Lagos and Oyo, finding its present establishment in Oyo in 1920. The institution’s early focus was on producing Grade II Teachers Certificate holders, and it incorporated a Divinity Course for training church ministers between 1910 and 1942.

St. Andrews College, Oyo, originally tied to CMS, London, saw a significant historical shift as it became inseparably linked to the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion). However, in 1977, the Nigerian government assumed control of all schools in the country, leading to the divestment of the church’s proprietorship of the college. Despite this, the St. Andrews College Old Boys Association (SACOBA) remained committed to the institution’s growth. In response to SACOBA’s efforts, the Oyo State Government upgraded the institution to an NCE campus in 1980 and eventually to a full-fledged College of Education in 1985.

The collective aspiration of Andrians (alumni of St. Andrews College) and their well-wishers, along with the Church of Nigeria (Anglican Communion), envisioned the transformation of St. Andrews College, Oyo, into a full-fledged university. Building on its success story and pioneering role in Nigerian tertiary education, the crucial step towards realizing this dream occurred on September 7, 1999. At that time, the Church of Nigeria granted the request of the St. Andrews College Old Boys Association (SACOBA) for the establishment of Ajayi Crowther University, Oyo, situated at the former site of St. Andrews College, Oyo, under the proprietorship of the Church.

To achieve university status, Ajayi Crowther University underwent a rigorous evaluation process mandated by the National Universities Commission (NUC). Subsequently, on January 7, 2005, the university was granted a license to operate as a private university in Nigeria. The institution is named in honor of Samuel Ajayi Crowther, the first African Bishop renowned for translating the Bible into Yoruba and several local languages. Bishop Crowther’s Episcopal Ministry had a profound impact, covering the entire West African subcontinent.

Location

Ajayi Crowther University (ACU), Oyo, is strategically situated in the Oke-Ebo Area along the Ibadan-Oyo-Ilorin road in the Atiba Local Government Area (LGA) of Oyo State. Easily accessible within one hour from Ibadan and Ogbomosho by road, and within two hours from Ilorin, Ile-Ife, and Lagos, all recognized as University Towns. The location provides ACU with significant academic and social interaction opportunities with neighboring University Towns in the region.

Oyo, now transformed into a University Town, boasts a cosmopolitan atmosphere fostered by the traditional hospitality of its people. This diversity is expected to influence the ACU campus, mirroring the legacy of the defunct St. Andrews College, known for hosting students from across the country. ACU continues this tradition as a prominent Anglican tertiary institution in Nigeria and the African tropics.

The University encompasses three additional campuses: The St. Andrews Campus, The Offa-Meta Campus, and the Osoogun Campus. The primary campus, located on the old St. Andrews College premises established in Oyo in 1896, occupies a land area of 37.02 hectares. Positioned within the built-up area of Oyo Town, this arrangement facilitates shared municipal services and utilities between the University and the town, enhancing accessibility. Furthermore, the acquisition of an additional 109 hectares about 2km from the St. Andrews Campus on Oyo-Ogbomoso Road at Offa-Meta expands the total landholding of the University to over 146.02 hectares.
