About the College

The College of Pharmacy at Afe Babalola University has a noteworthy evolution. Initially established as a Faculty within the College of Medicine and Health Sciences in August 2019, it transitioned into an autonomous College in February 2022. The pivotal approval by the University Senate marked it as the first fully accredited College of Pharmacy in Nigeria, a significant milestone.

The inception of the six-year Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D) Programme, sanctioned by the National Universities Commission (NUC) in January 2020, allowed for admissions starting from the 2019/2020 academic session. This aligns with the regulations set forth by the NUC and Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) for the establishment of a Pharmacy program.

The College of Pharmacy at Afe Babalola University comprises seven departments, each equipped with modern facilities, instruments, and ICT resources for teaching and research. These departments encompass a wide range of pharmaceutical fields, including Clinical Pharmacy and Public Health, Pharmaceutical and Medicinal Chemistry, Pharmacognosy and Natural Products, Pharmaceutics and Pharmaceutical Technology, Pharmaceutical Microbiology and Biotechnology, Pharmacology and Toxicology, and Social and Administrative Pharmacy.

The institution’s commitment to research and innovation is evident through the state-of-the-art S.E. Bogoro Research Centre, focusing on herbal medicine discovery and production. In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the College conducted groundbreaking research, leading to the development of ABUAD Herbal Virucidine Liquid, a triple-action therapy against severe COVID-19.

Within two years of its inception, the College of Pharmacy Building Complex was inaugurated in November 2021. This complex houses essential facilities such as the Provost and College Office wing, teaching and research laboratories, staff offices, College Library, classrooms, lecture auditorium, and a mini-drug production unit.

The College achieved accreditation from the Pharmacy Council of Nigeria (PCN) in April 2022, a testament to its high standards. To enhance teaching capabilities, lecturers received intensive training on Scientific Teaching and Pedagogy in July 2022.

In September 2022, the College hosted the Drug Discovery Africa 2022 International Conference, focused on building research capacity in drug discovery in Africa. This conference, fully sponsored by the Volksagen Stiftung, Germany, attracted participants and resource persons from Germany, Nigeria, and other sub-Saharan countries, including Ghana, Cameroon, and Sierra Leone. The College’s achievements reflect its dedication to academic excellence, research, and global collaboration.

The school fees for Pharmacy at Afe Babalola University vary depending on the academic level. Students in the 100, 200, and 300 levels are required to pay an annual fee of N2,367,500, while those in the 400 and 500 levels experience a slight reduction to N2,157,500.
