Lagos State University
Lagos State University, commonly referred to as LASU, is a prominent educational institution situated in Ojo, Lagos State, Nigeria. Established in 1983 under the enabling law of Lagos State, LASU is dedicated to advancing learning and promoting academic excellence, guided by its motto, “For Truth and Service.” The university plays a pivotal role in providing education to a diverse student body of over 35,000 individuals.
LASU operates across multiple campuses, with its main campus located in Ojo along the Badagry Expressway. Additionally, sub-campuses are located in Ikeja and Epe, both towns within Lagos State. These campuses accommodate various faculties and schools, offering a wide range of programs, including diplomas, degrees, and postgraduate studies, such as the MBA program.
Notably, LASU has gained recognition on both national and international levels. In 2020, it was ranked among the top 600 universities worldwide in the Times Higher Education World University Rankings. On June 23, 2021, LASU achieved the distinction of being recognized as the best young university in Nigeria, a remarkable achievement given its relatively short history. Furthermore, it earned the title of the second-best university in Nigeria in September 2020, as per Times Higher Education rankings, and stood as the sole state university included in the 2022 rankings.
The university has attracted international funding, particularly for the establishment of the World Bank Group Africa Centre for Excellence in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). This reflects LASU’s commitment to academic excellence and research in these critical fields.
LASU initially operated as a multi-campus, non-residential university with four fully owned campuses. These include the main campus in Ojo, the Epe campus housing the Faculty of Engineering and the School of Agriculture, and the Ikeja campus hosting the College of Medicine at Lasuth. LASU’s commitment to growth is evident in the ongoing construction of a 300-seat theater hall at the main campus in Ojo, along with a new library building and a student affairs building.
The university has expanded its academic offerings over the years. Initially, it began with three faculties: Commerce and Business Administration, Law, and Medicine. The Faculty of Commerce and Business Administration was later renamed the Faculty of Business and Social Studies. Subsequently, LASU introduced additional faculties, including Arts, Education, Engineering, Social Sciences, Management Sciences, Science, Communication and Media Studies, and the School of Transport. This expansion underscores LASU’s dedication to providing diverse educational opportunities for its students.

LASU Hostel Pictures
Lagos State University (LASU) recently expanded its hostel accommodations, opening its doors to both male and female students. For several years, only the female hostel was accessible to students. However, this changed with the construction and opening of a new hostel, which has now become available for all students. LASUDEF, the Lagos State University Development Foundation, played a pivotal role in making this expansion possible. In August 2023, it was reported that LASUDEF officially handed over a 96-bed units female hostel to LASU. Other bodies had also contributed to the establishment of LASU hostels. Below are some of the University’s hostel pictures when it was under construction.

Prior to the availability of these student hostels, many LASU students had to seek accommodation in private off-campus hostels. Fortunately, numerous off-campus hostels, such as Moremi Hostel, GMI Hostel, and others, offer affordable and conducive living options for both male and female students. This variety of choices has allowed students to find suitable accommodations that fit their needs and budgets. Photos of some LASU private hostels below.
